Nanette: A Very Brave Dog

and how one little dog showed her life

Bertie - 27th March 2009

Bertie had a go at another 'Rabbit' today!! The only problem was that this was a mistake on his part because  the 'Rabbit' was a Human!!  That dog is a 'Mauvais Reve', or if you prefer English....'A Nightmare'!! Of course, Bertie is also adorable, but on this occasion??

We were walking along with the lead attached on our way to an office to deliver some papers. As Bertie didn't want to go in the same direction as I intended! I was obliged to sweep him up and tuck him under my arm. He's quite used to this so normally there's no problem.

Unfortunately, at the same moment, a man that I haven't seen for about 5 years recognised me and rushed over to give me an enthusiastic embrace. The sun was full on in my face, so I heard the voice but didn't see the person until too late!! Just as he made contact, Bertie leapt in my arms and buried his 7 teeth in the arm of my friend with a fearsome growling!! (Grace le bon Dieu, He has only 7 teeth!!! Bertie that is!!)

Now, when Bertie 'attacks', he doesn't just snap and let go....Oh No!!! He gets a good grip and shakes the object of his fury, which he did for an interminable 'minute'!!! When I finally got him off my very shaken friend, I asked him to remove his coat to see the damage. Fortunately, his coat being thick plus a pullover underneath was his saving grace! There were teeth marks but no punctures!! I couldn't believe it because Bertie was ferocious in this attack.

There wasn't any point in being angry with Bertie. As my friend observed, the dog was in a highly challenging situation with the belief that I was being attacked. However, it does firm up my conviction that his previous environment was one where there was a good deal of jealousy and disapproval of him. He would not in fact attack a woman so readily you see!!

We often use the phrase 'Educate the Dog'....I have  been convinced that this is the wrong way round and that it's we humans who need  the 'Education' when it comes to our Companions....just my opinion you understand xx
